Frequently Asked Questions About Your Oral Health

  • How Often Should I Visit the Dentist?

Regular dental visits are typically recommended every six months. These routine check-ups and cleanings help prevent common dental issues like cavities and gum disease. However, depending on your individual oral health, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits. If you have specific dental concerns, such as gum disease or a history of cavities, more regular visits may be necessary to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy.

  • What Should I Do if I Experience a Toothache?

If you're experiencing tooth pain, it’s important to contact your dentist right away. A toothache could be a sign of decay, an abscess, or another underlying issue that needs attention. In the meantime, you can rinse your mouth with warm salt water to relieve some discomfort and take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the tooth or gums, as it can cause tissue irritation.

  • How Can I Prevent Cavities?

Preventing cavities starts with good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and floss daily to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks is also important, as sugar contributes to plaque buildup and tooth decay. In addition, visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups, as they can catch early signs of decay before it becomes a problem. Your dentist may also recommend fluoride treatments or sealants to help protect your teeth.

  • Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Yes, modern dental x-rays, particularly digital x-rays, are very safe. They use significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays, and the images they produce help your dentist spot problems early, such as cavities, gum disease, or bone loss. X-rays are typically only taken when necessary, and your dentist will ensure the smallest amount of radiation is used. If you're concerned, feel free to ask your dentist about the safety measures in place during your exam.

  • What Should I Do if I Have a Dental Emergency?

If you're dealing with a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth, broken tooth, or severe pain, contact our office immediately. In case of a knocked-out tooth, try to place the tooth back in its socket or keep it in a container with milk until you reach the dentist. For a broken tooth or severe pain, applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can help reduce swelling. We’ll guide you through the necessary steps and get you in as soon as possible to minimize damage and relieve discomfort.
