Common Dental Emergencies

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies vary in severity, but knowing how to act quickly can minimize damage and relieve discomfort. Below are some common dental emergencies we treat and what you can do while waiting to see us.

  • Toothache

What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. If swelling occurs, apply a cold compress to the outside of your face. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the affected tooth or gum.

Why it matters: Toothaches can be caused by cavities, gum disease, or infections. Immediate care can prevent the problem from worsening and causing more severe pain.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth

What to do: Pick up the tooth by the crown (avoid touching the root). Rinse it gently with water. If possible, place the tooth back into its socket. If not, store it in milk or a saline solution.

Why it matters: Acting quickly can greatly increase the chances of saving the tooth. Call our office immediately for an emergency appointment.

  • Cracked Tooth

What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further damage.

Why it matters: A cracked tooth can lead to further complications if not addressed quickly, potentially causing infection or more severe pain.

  • Lost Filling or Crown

What to do: If a filling falls out, use dental wax or sugar-free gum to cover the exposed area. For a lost crown, try to replace it on the tooth using a temporary dental adhesive.

Why it matters: Without proper protection, the exposed tooth is vulnerable to decay and further damage. Call us right away to have it restored.

  • Abscessed Tooth

What to do: An abscess is an infection that requires immediate attention. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help alleviate discomfort, but do not attempt to pop the abscess.

Why it matters: An untreated abscess can spread infection, potentially causing serious health complications. Immediate care is essential to prevent this.

  • Chipped Tooth

What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the affected area. If you find any broken pieces of the tooth, save them and bring them with you to your appointment.

Why it matters: If left untreated, a chipped tooth can lead to infection or more serious damage. Prompt attention is key to preventing further issues.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Five black stars.

I totally reccommend Dr. Jabbar...This dental office is run by Dr. Jabbar and his wife.  They were very kind to me.  I went into office with teeth fractures of 2 teeth.  Dr. Jabbar did a very very thorough assessment and took images to identify exactly what teeth were injured.  Not always clear to see just by looking in the mouth.  He did a great job.  I had to make an appointment to see an Oral surgeon because 1 of  2 teeth that needs to be extracted is very close to my sinus cavity which if not removed carefully can injure my sinus cavity... so..an Oral Surgeon it shall be.  Very happy with my visit.

Five black stars in a row, presumably representing a high rating.

I had my first visit to the dentist and I was so glad it was with Dr. Jabbar. I was very nervous and anxious since I’ve never been to a dentist before but Dr. Jabbar turned my first dentist experience into a positive one. From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel comfortable and welcomed. Dr. Jabbar was incredibly gentle and took the time to explain everything in detail, which really put me at ease. The exam was thorough, and I appreciated how carefully he addressed all of my concerns. He took his time with me and I felt like I was listened to. It's rare to find a dentist who combines such professionalism with a compassionate approach. I’m looking forward to my next visit and highly recommend Dr. Jabbar to anyone looking for a caring and skilled dentist.

Five black stars in a row.

Took my 3 year old daughter for a teeth cleaning and consultation. My child is deathly afraid of healthcare professionals and refuses to let anyone come near her. Dr. Jabbar put on a whole show and tell for her, made everything look silly and fun that she excitedly opened her mouth for the cleaning and loved getting her X-rays done. We had zero tears and all smiles. We left with a cool toy and a certificate for a job well done. Truly touched by that!

Five black stars in a row.

I called yesterday and Dr. Jabbar accommodated me today. Ample parking. No wait time. He was very thorough. Took his time. He’s keen to detail and has a great sense of humor which made the time fly. At the end he even showed my teeth in the mirror and asked me if there’s anything else. I was touched by his knowledge, bedside manner, calm demeanor, and gentle hand skills. I live 35 mins away and wouldn’t think twice to come back. Highly recommend him.
